In 2009 I had the opportunity to redevelop the staff intranet for Southside Christian College as a project subject for my Masters degree. Using Joomla!, an open source content management system, this project allowed me to develop practical skills in Information Architecture, including:

  • card sorting
  • wireframing

My project report gives a complete overview of the project.

Comments from staff

Nick Starrenburg – Operations Manager

  • Good initiative
  • Well structured
  • Well designed
  • Good basis to integrate into day day life of college
  • Sets us up to grow

Graeme Johnston – Principal

A lot of work has gone into this thank you.

The College intranet project, once implemented will greatly enhance the effectiveness and communication between and for staff. Information will be more easily accessed, the design is intuitive for the less computer literate, the pictures enhance College pride and allow staff from various parts of the staff to appreciate the work across the College. There is system in place for the various contributors to add their information to the intranet and to keep it up to date. This is a busy place with a high level of service to our families, students and fellow staff. This will improve this approach by reducing miscommunication and the need to “find out” what is going on. It also improves access to services and programs offered across the College programs. I look forward to the full implementation.

Michelle McDonald – Communications Officer

The navigability of the intranet is easy and straightforward. The aesthetics are exciting and attractive. And, the functionality is ideal because its purposefulness and capacity are exactly what a medium sized school requires to communicate and inform effectively.

Leslie Ninness – Office Co-ordinator:

I think – “WOW!” To put that in professional wording…. it is –

  1. Easy to navigate
  2. Good choice of fonts for readability
  3. Good choice of colours
  4. Room for further growth and expansion of info

Thank you for using your initiative to see the need and make it happen (for us, as well as you!)
